Sleep Apnea or Sleep Apnoea?

If you have been diagnosed with OSA or are in the business of sleep there is no doubt you have heard of and are familiar with the words Sleep Apnea.

Pronounced Ap-Knee-A, this word has proposed many spelling quandaries for those using it. And it is highly possible you have seen a variety of spelling attempts. So which is correct?

There have been many creative attempts to spell this strange word, usually by those trying to find a solution to their partners snoring. Here are just some of the usual suspects:

  • – Sleep Apnia
  • – Sleep Apneoa
  • – Sleep Apnear
  • – Sleep Apneea
  • – Sleep Apnere

You may have even seen more weird and wonderful spellings than the above. But there are only two spellings that are actually correct and used across the sleep industry.

And the one you use is typically decided by your location in the big wide world.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep Apnea is the first spelling that is in fact correct. This version is typically used in the United States. Although Australia do use it too.

Sleep Apnoea

This is the second spelling that is also correct. This version is used in the UK, and also used by Australia.

So to make matters more confusing, Australia uses both terms. You will see across our blog we have used both variations. One is not right or wrong, they are both correct. And being in Australia we have the choice of which we use.

We use both to make sure both spellings that are used in Australia are used on our information. However, the most common one we use is Sleep Apnea.

What Actually Is Sleep Apnea?

Well, we have discussed the spelling but what is it? Sleep Apnea also known as Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder in which the patient suffers repeated periods of non-breathing during sleep.

This can be dangerous to the sufferer in many ways. But typically causes snoring, gasping and choking sounds during sleep.

It is important to get these symptoms checked, as left untreated Sleep Apnea can be life threatening.
