What is Dysania?

Dysania is also known as Clinomania. Clinomania originated from the Greek word “clino”, which means bed and “mania”, which means addiction. The literal meaning is “addiction to bed.”

 

This disorder – although not medically recognised yet – is defined by having trouble getting out of bed in the morning. It’s considered to be more serious than just feeling extraordinarily sleepy. The inability to get out of bed can last for a few days and accompanied by anxiety about getting up. Once the sufferer gets up, they instantly want to just return to bed.

 

If you think you suffer from Dysania, it’s important to consult a doctor so they can suggest coping strategies. But, how is it diagnosed?

 

Since it’s not yet recognised as a medical condition, it’s hard to differentiate what dysania is from someone who just needs more rest. However, there is a simple litmus test that can make it easier for doctors to identify if you or someone you know is suffering from Dysania.

 

In this test, patients are asked to write down in detail how they feel when they wake up in the morning. If they used words like “stressful”, “overwhelming”, “anxious”, or “debilitating”, then they are a suspect and required to consult with a doctor. More serious symptoms can also mean that they have depression.

 

Whatever the condition is, it’s always advised to try and get more rest. The following tips are recommended in achieving a good night’s sleep:

  • Have a tight sleeping schedule – go to bed and sleep at the same time each night
  • Make your sleep environment peaceful by controlling the temperature, light and noise
  • It’s advised to not sleep with any pets to avoid disruptions
  • Invest in a comfortable mattress
  • Exercise regularly to relieve any tension that might be building up over the day
  • Avoid rigorous activity at night
  • Avoid caffeinated drinks – opt for a tea or milk instead
  • Don’t consume alcohol or food before bedtime
  • Do not smoke – nicotine is an energiser
  • Try to relax with a warm bath, calming music or yoga before sleeping
  • Write down any worries
  • Get up if you cannot sleep and try and do something until you feel tired again

People who suffer from this disorder guarantees that it’s very real and it’s been taking a toll on their daily lives. Just because it hasn’t been recognised as a medical condition does not mean it should not be taken seriously.
