What Is A CPAP Machine?

A CPAP machine is a piece of equipment designed to help people suffering with Sleep Apnea. CPAP is an abbreviation for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. The machine is a non-invasive form of treatment that helps Sleep Apnea sufferers breath at night.

CPAP Machine Components

Whilst there are three main components (mask, pipe/hose and machine) there are also lots of accessories that can make your CPAP machine more comfortable for you and increase the effectiveness.

The three main elements of a CPAP machine are:

  • The hose
  • The machine
  • The mask

The machine is main component that does all of the work. And can be bought on it’s own, or can be bought as a package with the hose and mask.

All of these components help the CPAP machine to work and fulfil its purpose. To use a CPAP machine, you will need all 3 of the above elements.

Outside of the three main parts you also have:

  • Humidifier Chamber
  • Chin Straps
  • Nasal Pillows
  • Power Cords and Cables
  • Travel Batteries
  • Adapters and Seals

And more!

These accessories are great for making the CPAP machine more comfortable for the user. And can help with adjusting to using one at night.

All of these parts, extras and accessories also need to be washed and maintained to ensure your CPAP machine is working at full capacity.

A Sleep Scientist can advice you on the correct machine for your needs and how to maintain the machine. For more information on cleaning and maintenance of CPAP machines click here.

Spare parts or bundles can be bought if any of the above items need replacing.

How Does It Work?

The machine blows air through the hose and into the mask. The mask is worn by the individual suffering with Sleep Apnea. The air from the machine enters their airway to keep it open, allowing them to maintain a breathing pattern at night-time.
