How Does CPAP Work?
CPAP is an abbreviation for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. It is a machine designed as a non-invasive treatment for those with Sleep Apnoea. But, how does CPAP work?
Simply, CPAP works by blowing air into the throat. There are 3 components that allow this to happen:
- Mask
- Hose/Pipe
- Machine
The machine forces air through the hose/pipe and into the mask, which subtly increases air pressure in the throat of the user and preventing the airway from narrowing.
A CPAP machine usually has one pressure that remains constant throughout the night whether the user is exhaling or inhaling.
With Sleep Apnoea the airway collapses or relaxes and stops air being able to pass through the airway, resulting in snoring, choking, gasping and even periods of not breathing.
This can be extremely dangerous and can cause many health issues. Not just for the sufferer, but also loved ones that are kept awake at night also.
What Are The Benefits Of CPAP?
CPAP machines offer several benefits, such as:
- A better night sleep meaning less daytime fatigue
- Improved focus and concentration meaning less risk of accidents
- Lower blood pressure meaning less risk of heart disease and other medical conditions
- A healthier and more stable mental health meaning a more fulfilled life
- Stable weight meaning a healthier body overall
A major plus with using CPAP machines as treatment for Sleep Apnoea is that they are a non-invasive form of treatment.
Whilst there is some adjustment time at the beginning to get used to how a CPAP machine works, how it feels and making it work for you, it is a great way to ensure you are getting enough sleep and the right stage of sleep.
How Does CPAP Work Effectively?
The best way to keep a CPAP machine working effectively is by keeping up with regular maintenance and working closely with your Sleep Physician to be sure the machine is doing what it needs for you as an individual.
There are some basic tips and tricks to ensure your CPAP machine is working at its full capacity:
- Make sure the seal over your airways is tight enough to allow for air to flow continuously from your CPAP machine. Being comfortable is key. Experiment with the various types of masks that are on offer.
- Ask your Sleep Physician about a CPAP machine with a humidifier. Some find that the machines and constant flow of air can cause their mouth to become dry. Some CPAP machines combat this with a humidifying process. This will make you more comfortable and therefore the machine more effective.
- Be sure to maintain and clean your machine properly. Use distilled water to prevent a build-up of tap water minerals. All machines will come with a manual. But you can also find out more about cleaning on our video.
Components Of CPAP Machines
Whilst there are three main components (mask, pipe/hose and machine) there are also lots of accessories that can make your CPAP machine more comfortable for you and increase the effectiveness.
All of these components help the CPAP machine to work and fulfil its purpose.
Outside of the three main parts you also have:
- Humidifier Chamber
- Chin Straps
- Nasal Pillows
- Power Cords and Cables
- Travel Batteries
- Adapters and Seals
And more!
All of these parts, extras and accessories also need to be washed and maintained to ensure your CPAP machine is working at full capacity.
Spare parts or bundles can be bought if any of these items need replacing.
Determining The Effectiveness Of Your CPAP Machine
The most important thing is to maintain contact and communication with your Sleep Physician as they will guide you through this journey and make sure you are on the right track.
Some machines have data that can be downloaded and shared with your Physician to determine if the settings on the machine are still effective and working for you as an individual. Your Sleep Specialist may choose to alter the pressure depending upon these results.
Another way to keep an eye on how your CPAP machine is working is by keeping a journal. In this journal you can write how you feel each day, how you feel you slept, any mood or appetite changes etc. This may help you to see how effective your CPAP machine is.
A loved one can also keep a journal reporting the same things. How they slept themselves (this can be a good indicator of how well your machine is working, often partners experience the effects of Sleep Apnoea more than the sufferer themselves), if they notice any mood changes in you etc.
